January, 2007

Dear Family & Friends,
Here are some of our family's highlights from 2006:
SOFM: Along with traveling and teaching in churches and YWAM schools, we had the joy of spending over 3 months in Singapore on staff with Melinda Tay and the School of Frontier Missions (SOFM), mentoring twelve students and two staff/students — all Singaporean except one from Vietnam.
In June, they all went to various fields as interns for 9 months: assignments are in Myanmar (Burma), East Timor, Indonesia, China, Inner Mongolia, Tibet, and Thailand.  We had grown so close to the staff and students, it was hard to see them leave.  However, we are confident that they will be effective Church Planters and hope to visit them on the field.

Cambodia:  David and Ellen ministered in Cambodia with Phillip and Wendy Scott and the YWAM team. For the past 6 years, Ellen & I have been going to Stung Treng once or twice a year to minister alongside these heroes for the wonderful church planting movement thriving in north Cambodia.  Ellen and David taught on Intercession & Worship and were blown away by the powerful times of corporate prayer.

David then went on to Malaysia and Thailand where he had several more weeks of ministry scheduled.  It’s always a bit surreal to be in a village setting ministering to a small group one day and then ministering in a church of 10,000 the next. Then in October, David spent two weeks ministering in South Africa. In all his trips, David was received with incredible favor and many gave or rededicated their lives to the Lord.  We love these chances to minister with our children!

Sean & Anne: In Chiang Rai, Thailand, we participated in the Indo China Regional leadership meeting (FM-RLT).  Sean and Anne, also a part of this leadership team, were on Furlough in Australia so only Sean was able to attend but it was wonderful to be with him. What a man of God he is! In July, they learned that finally, after 10 years of marriage, they are expecting a baby. They are now back home in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where the baby is due to be born in April. Of course, we are very excited to have another grandchild!

Calah, Moon & Jonah will be stationed in Korea for the next 2 to 4 years. They leave next month. We cherish the times we’ve spent with them and of course have all fallen in love with our little Jonah as well. Calah & Moon are such extraordinary parents!  And Korea’s not really so far away…

USA: We were in northern Virginia in November to speak in the Christian Assembly Missions Conference. We also had the wonderful opportunity to connect with all of our supporting pastors.  Then we were in Oregon and Washington the first 2 weeks of December to teach in YWAM DTS’s.  Traveling is exhausting but worth it!

Surprising New Direction
After much time in prayer and counsel from YWAM leadership and our supporting church pastors, Ellen, David and I agreed to take on the challenges of resurrecting YWAM Tampa and Trilby Baptist Church.  This call has come as quite a surprise to us after all of our years of ministering in Southeast Asia.

We will still need to travel overseas once or twice a year since our focus will be on training missionaries for Asia through SOFM. In between traveling and teaching in YWAM, we have spent a lot of time painting and repairing the church building. It needs a lot of tender loving care but has great potential.

We only have 12-14 people regularly attending the services now, but they all have leadership qualities that we believe will bring growth to the church. How wonderful to have a church planting school coincide with a church plant in the middle of an immigrant community in Pasco County, the most un-churched county east of the Mississippi. Our passion and calling is to carry out the Great Commission in our generation.

Our mission at YWAM Tampa is to:

  • Mobilize local churches through programs like Kings Kids, Mission Trips, Migrant Workers Ministries, Theater productions (Judah Ben-Hur, Song of the Shepherd, etc,)  and the “Bless 301 Project.”
  • Train through Discipleship Training Schools and Schools of Frontier Missions.
  • Send missionaries to the mind-molders and the neediest countries especially targeting the countries of Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Our strategy is to serve the existing YWAM ministries in those areas through internship programs.

If you would like to donate time to help us in these new endeavors, we would love to hear from you. Hey! We’d love to hear from you anyway! Have the most wonderful Christmas and New Year!

With Love from Art, Ellen and family
